uCADETS: THE NEXT GENERATION OF SEAFARERS
 THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT
        ASHANTI STORR
My name is Ashanti Storr and I graduated from Saint Augustine’s College in 2013. In my latter high school years, I partook in RBDF Rangers, Girl Guides Rangers and Bahamas Maritime Cadet Corps. Excelling in these extracurricular activities, I graduated top of my BMCC program and received the Clyde Bethel Award for hard work and dedication.
With my combination of accolades, I decided to pursue an Engineering License at SUNY Maritime College. After completing my BMCC I was inspired to work in the maritime eld as an Admiralty lawyer. However, before pursing such a career I wanted to be a marine engineer on an oil tanker prior.
In 2014 I received a full scholarship from the Bahamas Maritime Authority. As a part of my degree, I have been in the Regiment of Cadets from my freshman year of college. I personally believe that the Regimental lifestyle teaches important values of discipline, comradery and work ethic required to survive when working at sea for months at a time.
I sat my US Coast Guard Engine License in the Winter of 2017 where I successfully passed 8/8 of my exams. As a new Third Assistant Engineer, I feel promise for my Maritime career as a Marine Engineer. With the tremendous assistance of the Bahamas Maritime Authority and the academic experiences I obtained, I am navigating on the course plotted towards my daily goals.
MALIK GREEN
My name is Malik Green, I am 22 years old and I’m an Engine Rating and an upcoming Marine Engineer currently working onboard a Cruise Ship. I am a graduate of Holland College’s Engine Room Rating course in September 2013. I have been sailing from the age of 18 from February 2014 onboard a Ro-Ro cargo vessel for two years, until a new opportunity arose for me to join the Cruise sector in February 2016. Ever since then I’ve been eager to increase my knowledge to further develop myself for the next level of competency as a 3rd class Marine Engineer and with further studies to eventually become a Chief Engineer and Port Engineer.
JAMAAL O’NIEL FOULKES
My name is Jamaal O’Niel Foulkes. I am a 24 year old Navigational Rating. I was introduced to the Maritime Industry by the Bahamas Maritime Cadet Corps in 2013. Intrigued by this path, I decided to study Maritime at Holland College Marine Training Centre in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada, where I achieved my Bridge Watch keeping certi cation as a rating in 2013. My rst career as a Navigational Rating was on the M/V Lady Rosalind ll. In March of 2015 I enrolled at the Maritime Professional Training Institution in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I completed a course in Tankerman Familiarization. I then went to work with an Oil Tanker Company on the M/T Ocean Breeze. I am preparing to study at South Tyneside Maritime School, in the United Kingdom, where I hope to receive my Of cer of the Watch license.
BREANN RAHMING
My journey at SUNY Maritime College began after being awarded the Bahamas Maritime Scholarship in 2016. I was accepted into SUNY Maritime and left the Bahamas in August 2017, after graduating from the Bahamas Academy of Seventh-Day Adventists School in June. I am in the Regiment Program and have found it to be a life-changing experience. For the 4 years that I will be attending SUNY Maritime, I will be majoring in Marine Environmental Science with a minor in Marine Biology. I am also working towards earning my Deck License, so that I can become a 3rd Mate.
I am currently looking forward to my rst Summer Sea Term Cruise and can’t wait to explore the world. I am beyond grateful for the amazing opportunity that the BMA has provided for me. So I would encourage others who have a passion for the Maritime Industry to take advantage of the opportunities that such establishments like the Bahamas Maritime Authority offer to hard working students.
