The BMA itself was a supporting organisation of the event. The day began with a conference of discussions, which included an address by HRH the Princess Royal and a welcome from the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Sue Dann. The conference was themed around the subject of The Marine Environment: Challenges for the Future Professional Mariner and culminated in The NI’s 50th Annual General Meeting. The proceedings then moved from the University of Plymouth to The Box, Plymouth’s new cultural and heritage museum, where guests enjoyed the Golden Celebration Dinner with music from the Philharmonic Quartet and an after-dinner speech by Rear Admiral Chris Parry. Captain Andre LeGoubin FNI was announced as the incoming President of The NI taking over from Jillian Carson-Jackson FNI. We would like to thank Jillian for her contribution over the past two years and look forward to engaging with Capt LeGoubin in the future. The BMA congratulates The Nautical Institute on this great achievement and on the excellent work it does around the world, providing inspiration, knowledge and leadership to maritime professionals and representing its members at the International Maritime Organisation. In fact The BMA numbers nine Master Mariner members of The NI and maintains an active NI group membership scheme.
